Deodorants and anti-perspirants aren't working, why?
Hey, fellows. I need some great help from you because I've been struggling with body odor after starting to work out. So for years, I was using a Nivea deo and it worked well until about 4 months ago when I finally started an active lifestyle. I started going to the gym 4-5 times a week and clean bulking. I got desirable results in my gym progress... however, that wasn't the case for my armpits. Somehow, whatever deo/antipers that I use, sweat would still get through and make me stink. I've tried Dove, Rexona, Axe, and currently Old Spice. Old Spice would hold up for a bit but the other 3 that I've tried were no help at all. My confidence has been taking a toll lately. Seriously, any and all help would be greatly appreciated, thanks all.

Go see a dermatologist. Certain-Dri does wonders as well and it’s available on Amazon

This reminds me of my time as a front office clerk, people would come in for things like "heavy breathing during exercise" and "very tired at night after work".

You using white solid sticks? I get better results with those. Also I just plan on stinking when I workout. Shower afterwards and reapply deodorant and I'm good to go. Usually use Dove or Old Spice solid white antiperspirant and deodorant.
The gel or invisible solids don't last more than a couple hours for me.

Try putting on the antiperspirant at night before bed. Google "putting antiperspirant on at night" if you doubt.

What's your diet like? How often do you shower?

My diet consists of mostly rice, meat, eggs, and oats (I'm asian), but I eat veggies one meal a day. I try to get as much protein as I could. Right now, I shower atleast 2 times a day--once after breakfast and another before hitting the gym because that worked on reducing the smell.

You should be showring after the gym, not before. No amount of antiperspirant or deodorant is going to completely negate your BO after a good workout.

Ah yes, I forgot to add the other shower session after the gym. So actually, that's 3 showers a day with the after gym shower being the most intense. Anyway, thanks g, much appreciated

What spices do you use? None of that sounds unusual. You might just have a condition

When you shower do you use a washcloth with some soap on to wash you armpits? It makes a big difference (the washcloth). And indeed, a white stick deodorant works better then the spray or wet roll on one's. I use one from sanex now but you have many different kinds. And do you smoke weed? Eat a lot of Indian spices? Do you eat a lot of onions or garlic? It tends to make your sweat smell worse.

Ah yes. Although quite contrary to what I've said, I'm actually a little hygiene-freak person, so I always use a loofah in each and every bath session. Rn I use Old Spice Fiji which is a white stick deo. No smoking and even alcohol for me. Onion and garlic intake is normal. Anyway thank you for the Sanex recommendation im checking it out.

Did you try trimming you armpit hairs a bit? Good luck with your pits!

Oh and it's normal to sweat and to be stinky during a workout. But you knew that already I guess

I’ve been using ammonium alum (those crystal deodorants) since I was 24. Lasts for a couple days.
1
u/Magnuxz Dec 01 '22
Oh, are there any side effects to that? Also since they're anti-perspirant substitute can I put on a deo after it so my pits have some smell as well?

u/Recondite_neophyte Dec 01 '22
It’s not a antiperspirant substitute. It is a deodorant that forms a layer on your skin that inhibits bacteria growth = you don’t stink. It’s a healthy options as your body doesn’t absorb it, unlike traditional deodorants with chemicals. I personally do not have a problem becoming overly sweaty so I don’t have a need for an antiperspirant. They do make them scented and non scented.

Use degree that works wonders

u/Magnuxz Dec 01 '22
Oh I'll check that one. Never checked it because I thought it was a Rexona ripoff with the check logo. What scent or version do you recommend?

Degree advanced protection 48 hours even in triple digit summers I would never smell like pits 8 hours doing ironworking.

If you're sweating while working out you're going to stink while you're sweating. A good antiperspirant deodorant can help, but you're not going to stop the smell entirely. Shower after exercise and wash clothing regularly.

1) shave ur pits
2) bathe (shower) with soap after a work out . Dry properly , apply anti perspiration, Deo and EDT. Wear fresh clothes
3) wear / change / wash undershirts everyday .
4) if you are taking a heavy protein diet , that may also be causing an issue, consult a doc and do a kidney test , if kidneys are damaged or overloaded , your skin may be excreting urea. ( very unlikely and I hope it is not this )
5) maybe it is just your manly-man man-smell .

Try adding an aftershave with a decent alcohol content. Bacteria doesn’t take long to build up on your skin if you are sweating.
Also try to drink enough water to keep your urine clear. A lot of the same waste can be secreted in your sweat.

your diet has a huge impact on what you smell like and every seems to forget that if you fill your body with shit you’re going to smell like shit

Try Ban, it’s the only thing that works for me. At one point I bought one of every brand at the store to try…

Your deodorant is going to be decimated by your work out. You need to shower after your work out then re-apply.
