Einar seivik is a genius… and underused in Valhalla. Typical Ubisoft

52

u/Pigwarts Feb 06 '23

I'm just here to say that the Valhalla OST is one of my absolute favorites from the last decade. It manages to blend chilly atmospheric with just a bit of horror/cult vibes.

I agree that the game is unbearably average but the music is amazing. I have it on a couple of playlists that I listen to quite frequently.

9

u/Chtholal Feb 06 '23

Listen to wardruna

3

u/Vict2894 Feb 06 '23

And Heilung

0

u/myyummyass Feb 06 '23

Overall it feels average, but i still dont think anyone does an open world like ubisoft does. The detail in pretty much all of the AC games open worlds and the variety and just general art design is so, so good. If only they could put some more focus on the writing.

3

u/CannaGuy85 Feb 06 '23

Rockstar and RDR2. Much better open world.

over the actual God of War Ragnarok?! dafuq

Edit: Grammy cutoff makes it not eligible. Thanks for the info

67

u/ElJacko170 Feb 06 '23

I don't think Ragnarok was eligible this year, all these nominees are from 2021 practically.

9

u/haynespi87 Feb 06 '23

Ah thanks for the clear up

22

u/iwasherenotyou Feb 06 '23

GOW wasn't in the nominations list. I think it just didn't make the cutoff date for Grammy submissions.

14

u/signalflow313 Feb 06 '23

Grammy cutoff is september. It will be nominated for sure next year

0

u/Geraltpoonslayer Feb 06 '23

But then how wasn't eldenring?

1

u/Eruannster Feb 06 '23

Or Horizon Forbidden West?

10

u/Poetryisalive Feb 06 '23

GOW wasn’t even on the list

13

u/henrokk1 Feb 06 '23

I really don’t like AC Valhalla, but it’s soundtrack is full of absolute bangers.

2

u/SightlessKombat Feb 06 '23

No disrespect to any composer involved in this, I've not played the Ragnarok Valhalla expansion so can't speak to it, but I was literally thinking the exact same thing, so thanks for the edit to clarify.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

Yes… 100% over GoW even if it was nominated.

1

u/haynespi87 Feb 06 '23

Nah

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

Biased response, but okay.

-1

u/haynespi87 Feb 06 '23

considering low quality assassin's creed nah. And opinions

1

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

Damn, and you just proved my point. You didnt even play the game. We are talking about score not the game itself and Valhalla was wayyy better.

0

u/haynespi87 Feb 06 '23

😴 Raebs Lament is greater than anything

0

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

Within GoW… Not much of a comparison vs a grammy-winning score.

1

u/haynespi87 Feb 06 '23

Obviously the whole score. You out here hyping AC Valhalla over gow Ragnarok...seriously let me know your dealer

2

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

Iv played both. You haven’t. From a musical perspective Valhalla is so much better.

Also, Wardruna plays 100% traditional Norse instruments and is the closest we’ll likely get to an, albeit dramatized, version of Norse pagan music.

u/trooper575 Feb 06 '23 edited Feb 06 '23

Some of the Assassin’s Creed soundtracks are straight up better than sex (especially AC2 and Brotherhood). That reminds me I was working on a playlist of their best tracks, I should finish it

10

u/hunters_trap Feb 06 '23

Ezio's Family and the Black Flag Main Theme are top tier for me!

4

u/ithinkther41am Feb 06 '23

But is it better than CBat sex?

9

u/relinquished2 Feb 06 '23

Can you drop a link to the playlist? That'd be hype!!!

9

u/trooper575 Feb 06 '23

I could later on, I’ve pretty much just thrown all the soundtracks into a playlist and am slowly filtering out the songs I don’t like/don’t want to listen to so it’s going to end up as more of a favorites list than a coherent playlist but I can still link it once I’ve narrowed it down some

9

u/DramaticallyOxygen Feb 06 '23

Beer and Friends from AC3 has to be on that playlist right? God it's such a good track, it's lived rent-free in my mind for the last 11 years

Edit: Can't forget about Fight Club either, god such memories

6

u/Mr-Montecarlo Feb 06 '23

Man i used to love fight club the song, thanks for bringing it back into my radar. I might have to go back and listen to some AC OST while working now.

3

u/trooper575 Feb 06 '23

Definitely to both, Ezio’s Family is another of my favorites that I’ll be listening to on the way to school lol

2

u/Mr-Montecarlo Feb 06 '23

Ezios family has to be one of the best songs of all time. Jesper Kyd was in his bag for that one.

1

u/KoYouTokuIngoa Feb 06 '23

AC origins has the best soundtrack IMO. Listen to it regularly

12

u/lovelyjubblyz Feb 06 '23

Its just a shame that the actual sound design for the game was garbage. Opening scenes sound was so bad in terms of voice placement, foot steps, atmosphere etc. Really threw me off enjoying the story.

33

u/_Deemun Feb 06 '23

Having played both Valhalla and GoW (I know it wasn't part of the category cause if cutoff) but Valhalla's soundtrack was superb. It was far more Nordic and viking-ish than that of GoW and genuinely has some amazing tracks.

13

u/Task_Force-191 Feb 06 '23

Composers Austin Wintory ("Aliens: Fireteam Elite"), S Bear McCreary (Call Of Duty®: Vanguard"), Richard Jacques ("Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy") and Christopher Tin ("Old World") were also nominated in the new category.

13

u/hobo_lad Feb 06 '23

Nier Replicant should have been nominated and won.

1

u/OriginalUserNameee Feb 06 '23

100% this game is art

3

u/MEAN_STREET_MANU Feb 06 '23

Congrats Vahalal 🤭🤭🤭

7

u/Eruannster Feb 06 '23

Apparently the nominations were:

  • Aliens Fireteam Elite

  • Call of Duty Vanguard

  • Guardians of the Galaxy

  • Old World

  • Assassins Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok (winner)

That’s… a weird list of video games to be nominated. Uhh…?

6

u/LCHMD Feb 06 '23

Guardians OST is amazing but for different reasons, not composition.

15

u/-boozypanda Feb 06 '23

Too bad it's attached to such a boring and generic game.

4

u/htxscrew Feb 06 '23

Hard agree. I gave the game a good 20hrs of my time before finally giving up on it.

Checking out the soundtrack I must’ve slept through won’t hurt though.

11

u/MixmasterG1 Feb 06 '23

I guess the music must have been really good cause the game was a snooze fest.

3

u/zebra_lolipop Feb 06 '23

I've play over 100 hours and i have no idea about the soundtrack since most of the time i play at night with very minimal sound to prevent distruption to my baby & wife.

7

u/Grenadeglv Feb 06 '23

Headphones mate, especially with Dead Space just come out and RE4 around the corner

4

u/_Elder_ Feb 06 '23

I liked Valhalla as a game and much more than Odyssey. Well earned soundtrack.

2

u/KnightFan2019 Feb 06 '23

Didnt this game have a huge issue with audio compression and overall lack of audio quality? Lmao

6

u/htxscrew Feb 06 '23

Yes it was absolutely abysmal when I played a few months after launch.

1

u/rommie30 Feb 06 '23

Didnt play dawn of Ragnarok due to being sick of assassins creed Valhalla by the time its dlc released

-5

u/Poetryisalive Feb 06 '23

How in the world did THIS beat GoTG?!?! They made a literal rock album and a good one at that.

Valhalla was so generic imo, I don’t get it lol

6

u/hunterzolomon1993 Feb 06 '23

Well i'm guessing they're more interested in original work and not a compilation album. Valhalla and its Expansion had a fantastic score so its well deserved. Also there's nothing generic at all about it.

5

u/DoIrllyneeda_usrname Feb 06 '23

It's the same academy that didn't even nominate The Weeknd's After Hours lol

2

u/ravinglt0 Feb 06 '23

I think that happened cause they made him choose between Grammy or Super Bowl and Abel said fuck it and went for Super Bowl. Really petty from Grammy and yeah they have been a joke for years now

2

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

I loved that game way more than I was expecting, really hope we get a sequel

1

u/Chtholal Feb 06 '23

Einar selvik > all

1

u/LCHMD Feb 06 '23

Guardians had a great OST but hardly any original compositions.

1

u/Mac_Gold Feb 06 '23

That’s why they lost, they weren’t original songs. It sounds like a pre made playlist. Valhalla had legitimate original music

1

u/ABigCupidSunt Feb 06 '23

I still won't give dawn of Ragnarok a go. Valhalla was an absolute turd of a game.

1

u/Geraltpoonslayer Feb 06 '23

Ok what? Like I can name 5 games last year that had a better soundtrack.

-4

u/shawny_mcgee Feb 06 '23

Valhalla sucks

-6

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

How did this beat Sonic Fontiers ?

3

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

afaik these are exclusive to 2021 games

-5

u/alexshinsuke Feb 06 '23

Easy, sonic frontiers was a bad game..

3

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

In music I mean

-3

u/alexshinsuke Feb 06 '23

Easy again, the music was super good. Ubisoft knows how to create great themed soundtracks

0

u/SNKRSWAVY Feb 06 '23

Have dipped out of AC after Origins due to the sizes of the games and how they are constructed, but I still remember it‘s soundtrack being how I imagined ancient Egypt to sound like and I still listen to AC2’s to soundtrack, which was crazy good and also liked Syndicate’s sound, so I can imagine the music being one of it‘s more redeeming qualities.

0

u/mrfroggyman Feb 06 '23

Honestly I don't get it. The soundtrack is good.... but there were greater options!

0

u/Velaria425 Feb 06 '23

I didn’t play it, by the time I beat Valhalla I was too ready to put the game down. I was so over that game lol

Edit: congrats though Valhalla! That’s pretty amazing

0

u/jguess06 Feb 06 '23

How did Elden Ring not win this? The score of the title screen alone should have guaranteed it lol

-10

u/Rogue_Leader_X Feb 06 '23

Pretty lame! Valhalla didn’t even have that stupendous of a score. There were way more deserving nominees!

-6

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

Genshin released in 2020.

These are all 2021 releases

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

[deleted]

3

u/Poetryisalive Feb 06 '23

No, this is a brand new category this year. They are starting with the Year 2021 for consideration. It doesn’t matter if they release new music, gaming isn’t the same as an artist.

Genshin won’t be considered unless they release a brand new game. Likely next year we will see, GOW, Elden Ring, Strive.

Honestly.

We don’t even know if Japanese titles would even win. International artists/songs just started winning a year or so ago.

We would need to see how the trend goes

2

u/flekkzo Feb 06 '23

Japan has consistently churned absolute bangers as far as soundtracks goes. Now we practically need another Nier and Persona.

I wonder if remakes count, because FF7 has one hell of a soundtrack.

-1

u/FallenShadeslayer Feb 06 '23

It also has absolutely nothing to do with this.

-3

u/MuddVader Feb 06 '23 edited Feb 06 '23

Was Elden Ring not in the running?

3

u/LCHMD Feb 06 '23

Neither Elden Ring nor GoWR were released early enough for a nomination.

4

u/Eruannster Feb 06 '23

Apparently the nominations were Aliens Fireteam Elite, Call of Duty Vanguard, Guardians of the Galaxy, Old World and Assassins Creed Valhalla,: Dawn of Ragnarok which is… the weirdest list of video game nominations I’ve seen.

1

u/Chtholal Feb 06 '23

Elden ring ost was pretty bad compared to the goat ost in ds3 imo

-4

Seeing as that's not what the award was for, what's your point?

-1

u/ilJumperMT Feb 06 '23

Metal hellsinger robbed again

-5

u/unaviable Feb 06 '23

Lmao there is so much better OST from games. Probably paid their way to the grammy

1

u/GraysonG263 Feb 06 '23

Y'all been sleeping on Jesper Kyd the whole mfn series. Man's a damn genius and just knows how to write for this franchise. I love the series, but any game's score written by him is just better than the rest.

cough 1 through revelations cough

1

u/Pigwarts Feb 08 '23

He did the Darksiders 2 music right? That's another of his thats stunning to listen to.

1

u/PassTheCurry Feb 06 '23

can someone let me know if this was shown on the actual grammy show the world watches or the pre show that no one watches?

1

u/Jpalme11 Feb 06 '23

What’s the best song on this soundtrack? Need hiking music.

1

u/Pigwarts Feb 08 '23

Depends on your mood. I'll throw Ravensthorpe in for nice atmospheric ambient piece. Or Jarls, Karls, and Thralls for a more up beat action piece.
