Was gonna say, I’m not even sure the “dogs” are dogs. Shibas tend to look like plush toys ejected from the Disney animation studios.

u/Smirk27 Dec 01 '22
Seriously some of the fluffiest doggos I've ever seen.

u/tuckedfexas Dec 01 '22
Some very well groomed shibas, I can’t keep mine clean for a whole day lol

Shiba's are the sassiest non-dogs with cattitude you'll see at the park

u/Bella_C2021 Dec 01 '22
I had a rescue shiba for a while. Sadly he was too traumatized by previous experiences in his life and I had to return him. He had moments of being the sweetest shiba though and I still miss that boy.
I am a lot more cautious about shibas though and not as eager to get one again even though I did extensive research and went hard-core on getting him everything he could need to feel comfortable. I don't thing I will take another expert level dog until I have another 5 - 7 years of experience raising and dealing with a variety of different dog breeds and temperaments.

u/amk735 Dec 01 '22
I think you just had an extremely traumatized dog. My family had two shibas when I was growing up and no prior experience with dogs and they were great pets. Sure, they are stubborn and like to challenge you but that’s pretty minor overall.

u/Bella_C2021 Dec 01 '22
One day I will definitely try again hut when I do I think I will get one from being a pet. I think I mentioned he was the sweetest boy sometimes and we really did love him. We just couldn't give him what was needed to help him feel like a safe and happy boy and it wasn't fair to keep him and not give someone else a chance that could help him better.
4
u/Autumnrain Dec 01 '22
Never owned a dog, what made him so difficult compared to other dogs?
16
u/Bella_C2021 Dec 01 '22
I suspect he had ptsd or some form of severe anxiety. We would take him for long walks 3 times a day on a routine totalling about 10 km in walks this included daily fetch and jogs after walks he got trick training and puzzle toys to stimulate his mind. We gave him his own space unless he asked for pets and attention. We had chew toys for him to help self regulate.
He couldn't handle any loud noises or overstimulation this would set him into almost instant fight or flight so even though we tried to gradually work on desensitization training and positive reinforcement he was still very anxious. We had calming music and techniques to help him soothe when he got too worked up. The problem was if his routine was out of balance for even 30 min he would get so worked up he would lash out if you moved in a way that he thought seemed agressive. (This most cases was literally something as simple as bending over to pick up something he wasn't even interested in, I never bent over him since most dogs would take this as a threatening gesture and I knew he was a rescue wirh potential problems already.)
Shibas are naturally harder to care for because they are stubborn very smart and mouthy plus they don't have all the same body language signals as other dogs. I just didn't expect to get a Shiba that was that much.
I am sure some will probably say he is just typical shiba but I have seen well trained shibas and ones that have behavioral issues and I have yet to see a story of one that left a owner needing stitches without a valid reason for attacking ( once again I don't think he was agressive just his reason seemed valid to him because his mind wasn't in the right state to see what was happening wasn't threatening to him in any way.)

Poor guy went through hell and didn't seem able to come out of it
Hope he found a happy place

u/Bella_C2021 Dec 01 '22 edited Dec 01 '22
I do too we really wanted to help him especially since most our animals where rescues and i was able to help a agressive cat before to live out his golden years all happy with me and my partner.
Even though the shiba gave me a few scars I still think he was a good boy just misunderstood and very scared. I just couldn't help him.
Edit: I forgot to mention we have had dogs before we took in this shiba and I have been able to help dogs before that had owners that didn't give them the attention and excersize the needed.
2
u/joe_broke Dec 01 '22
Sounds like he was more defensive than combative, so, even though I'm not a dog therapist, he probably had a good heart, but had a long way to go before fully trusting anyone
Did you have other dogs or pets at the same time with him?
5
u/Bella_C2021 Dec 01 '22
The only other pets I had and have right now is my Uromastyx lizards and 2 fishtanks. He showed no interest in these at all.
We took him in knowing it would be a challenge and having had some experience with rehabilitating other animals and having had dogs in the past We thought we could help. The intention was to be able to give him the attention and spacehe would need as a only fur baby to help him feel safe and comfortable. We even had a spare room set up for him to go to when he wanted to be alone. Obviously we would go in there and he would know that he couldn't be possessive over the room and he never was but we never bugged him in that room and when he went in we never followed him in there.

As a shiba owner, I can confirm that their personalities are very cat-like. Independent, stubborn, smart as hell, refuses to do anything you tell them to unless they feel like it.

u/pospec4444 Dec 01 '22

My shiba will 100% refuse even if there are treats in it for her if she doesn't feel like it.
4
u/Andjhostet Dec 01 '22
My dog is half Shiba and half lab. So luckily the lab side of him takes over when food is involved hahaha. He is incredibly obedient when food is involved, and gives absolutely zero shits if not.
3
u/nibbyzor Dec 01 '22
Mine is very food motivated like 99% of the time, but that 1% when she's not in the mood... I could probably dangle an entire cooked chicken in front of her and she'd still refuse to sit.
2
u/tuckedfexas Dec 01 '22
Mine are headstrong but do listen. Mine are very affectionate and don’t seem to share some of the classic shiba behavior traits.

Reminds me of that kids song: "One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn't belong", I think played on Sesame Street, or possibly Sherri & Lambchops.

They updated the second line to "One of these things just isn't the same" in more recent years, which is actually a lot more positive way of framing it.

Dogs: Game-changer.
