[OC] Bad Bunny tops Spotify for the third consecutive year OC

u/Fehler-Hund Dec 01 '22
This guy doesn’t know who Bad Bunny, I doubt he knows Reggaetón. And besides, I’d argue Reggaetón falls under the broad brush stroke that is popular music. And if that’s not convincing enough, these stats demonstrate he is a “popular” artist. Ergo, pop artist.
3
u/New-Establishment536 Dec 01 '22
No, reggaetón falls under Urban Latin, which also includes Latin trap.
32
u/Apsylnt Dec 01 '22
Urban latin falls under pop. Genre’s are made up nonsense unless based around bpm. Bad bunny regardless what genre he makes is a pop artist no matter the technicality.

He's a reggaeton singer. His lyrics are trash but the rhythm is good. I do not personally hear him much, but everyone under 30 in Latin America hears him. It's the go-to party music.

Yeah didn't know who he was till I started dating my girlfriend this year. He's her favorite and she went to a concert of his back in April.
9
u/hold_me_beer_m8 Dec 01 '22
Let me tell you...I moved to Puerto Rico last year and had never heard of him either. In Puerto Rico, this guy is basically Elvis.
Interestingly enough...not only did he have top streaming, but his concert tour last year was the top grossing tour in the US.
He's from the very small town I currently live in and used to be a bag boy at the small grocery store I shop at.
2
u/Boyblunder Dec 01 '22
I see the appeal. He's insanely versatile as an artist. I've got quite a few of his songs on my "music for the lads" playlists.

Showing your age there lol there are many people who don't know Rammstein
Bad Bunny is definitely popular amongst non-Latinos but you also have to consider that the German diaspora is far smaller than Spanish so he's incredibly popular with a good chunk of the world and relatively popular with the rest.

I'm 23, American, and Black so I've pretty predictably never heard of them. Or at least, predictably if you consider that other people may have other perspectives. If I asked my multiracial friend group, I am 100% confident that all will know who Bad Bunny is and very few will know Rammstein..
→ More replies19
u/MrOobling Dec 01 '22 edited Dec 01 '22
Bad Bunny is significantly more famous than Rammstein, especially among the youth. His cultural influence, press coverage, commercial success, radio airplay, etc... are all significantly greater than Rammstein's. However, everyone grows up in different cultural and social circles, so it makes sense that people know different artists. In the US and Latin America, very few people know Rammstein while almost everyone knows Bad Bunny. I assume you're European, hence you think everyone knows Rammstein.
Edit: rereading your comment, you do come off as flat-out culturally insensitive. You can't seriously expect that your PoV is representative of everyone's PoV's, but doing this has resulted in you dismissing an incredibly important piece of non-white culture.

The thing that is true now and will always be is that popular music by most of the metrics used tends to skew a lot younger than the average population. The majority of the listens by metrics being tracked tend to go to people in the 12-25 range of age.
36
u/pk10534 Dec 01 '22
Or maybe you aren’t a Spanish speaker living in the Caribbean, central, South America, and Hispanic neighborhoods in the US where he is massive. How does that make popular music a sham?

I have been an amateur musician for 30+ years and music is super important to me, but I am really picky about what I actually like to listen to. I was just thinking that the amount of music that I hate is so much greater than the amount that I love that the amount of music I love is statistically a rounding error. It would technically be more accurate to say I hate music at this point. Is that what it means to get old? I'll just be over here yelling at clouds.

The most popular artists in the world and Post Malone is the only one I really fuck with, and even then, I like a few songs. I wouldn't call myself a fan.
As for the champ three years running, I've taken the time to listen to a few of his top songs on Spotify and I'm afraid Mr. Bunny isn't for me. Then again, I'm probably not his target demographic.

"Beautiful data" is data presently cleanly and concisely. It's not just aesthetically pleasing.

Nah, a big chunk of reddit traffic comes from the US, Bad Bunny is mostly known in Latin America. If you look at Spotify Data BadBunny is indeed the most streamed artist globally, but in the US is on the 3rd spot behind Taylor Swift and Drake.

They know him, they just think they’re cool for pretending not to know who the biggest artist in the world is. There’s almost 0% chance you haven’t read or heard his name at least once in the last 3 years unless you just don’t use technology
19
u/ageoflost Dec 01 '22

I got zero name recognition on this guy. And I at least kinda pay attention to music stuff.
Turns out I watched the Super Bowl performance he was in with Shakira back in 2020, but I had no idea who he was. I catch SNL sometimes but missed the episode where he was the musical guest last year. And he hasn’t been able to tour much since he got big because of the pandemic. Apparently he played Fenway Park this summer.

I genuinely haven’t. I had 24k minutes of indie/pop/rap/etc on my Spotify [edit: this year]. I use technology more than most, yet I’ve honestly never heard of him. I live in the uk and only speak English, did I hear he’s a Spanish artist or something? It’s weird I’ve never heard of the biggest artist though
12
u/Augen76 Dec 01 '22
Same. World is diverse and all of us have blind spots. Music is highly segmented. I listen to rock and all its sub genres so a rap or pop artist could sell out 100K stadiums and have a trillion streams all time and I'd have no clue who they are.
We get insulated in our worlds and project out against others. I love soccer and the world cup is going on and I know people who don't know who Messi is. Unthinkable to me, but if you don't follow sports why would you know?
4
u/gurneyguy101 Dec 01 '22
Exactly, especially with an obvious language barrier and my total disinterest in Spanish music
There are loads of examples of this, like WeChat - god knows how many users it has and yet I wouldn’t be surprised if a big proportion of England/USA etc didn’t know what it was because it isn’t in any way relevant to us/them
3
u/santimo87 Dec 02 '22
The language barrier seems to be unidirectional, it makes no sense to me for someone to only listen to music in their native language.
3
15
u/the5pacepope Dec 01 '22

u/AustinLurkerDude Dec 01 '22
There’s almost 0% chance you haven’t read or heard his name at least once in the last 3 years
Dont think I ever heard his music before, just browsed his music on Youtube and none of them appear to be in English (or very good, maybe a language barrier thing). Its weird though, as I've heard of other big Latin artists like Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, and Luis Fonsi and enjoy their music (both English and non-English).
It just incredible how there's huge cultures of the world that are mainstream to some and unknown to others. Like there's Bollywood stars I've never heard of that have been in movies seen by over a Billion ppl and similarly there's starts in Taiwan/China/S. Korea that also have similar stardom that would just be ghosts here in USA.
Same with instant messengers, how Whatsup is popular but most in my circle use LINE and some places its only Wechat. Interesting world.

5

I know all the other artists mentioned there but not Bad Bunny. I’ve seen his name being mentioned a lot here but just haven’t listened to his songs at all. I listen to some kpop so it’s not like I live under the rock. But I stopped listening to the radio so that’s prob why.
3
u/conker1264 Dec 01 '22
But see that’s the difference. You’ve acknowledged you’ve heard his name being mentioned. I’m not saying you should know his music or have listened to his music even. But to act as you’ve never once heard his name mentioned ever is ignorant
2
u/Royal_Milk Dec 01 '22
Or maybe stating that I've never heard his name before is just a fact, not ignorance. I see what I see on the internet and apparently it was never anything about him, even just his name, until this post. Idk why you have such a hard time believing that

I’m aware of his / their existence, but up until now did not know that he was a he (not a band), nor which genre of music he was into. I’d not come across any of his music, perhaps as listening to music is a more private, curated experience now than in the broadcast heydays of previous decades.
Still, given him a listen, and not to my taste (can’t stand auto tune and I prefer to listen to whole songs rather than snippets of other peoples’), but I’m better informed than before, so a good use of 5 mins to get down wit da yoof ;-)
Plus, Pete Rodriguez sounds great, so going to give some of that genre of music a spin tomorrow!

He’s been in my top-streamed 5 for 3 years.
He’s dropped 4 top albums in the last 24 month, and a 5th right before that… and he’s pushing culture (especially Latin culture) forward while combatting gender stereotypes and discrimination, lifting up his people across Puerto Rico and Latin America (and beyond), and bringing attention to important topics like corruption in the energy company and other contracts in Puerto Rico… all while staying humble and personable.
You don’t have to like his music… but so much respect for this artist!

First Bad Bunny is from the United States.
Second there were plenty of bangers by Puerto Ricans on rap stations when I was a kid. I know who Daddy Yankee is.I think the reason why more people don’t know who Bad Bunny is because no one is actively trying to market him to English speaking Listeners. He has features with Cardi B and featured Drake but they didn’t seek heavy rotation on English stations.
I didn’t know who he was so I checked out a few songs and I think that if they marketed him on Black rap stations the audience would like it.

This comment section is so full of insecurity it is breathtaking. A lot of people here are chronically online and are exposed to all sorts of random facts and people, without ever searching for them. Do you not think that it is an interesting fact that so many of us have litterally never heard of the most streamed artist in the world?
I am one of the people that hadn't heard of him. Seeing that I'm by no means not alone is an interesting anecdotal piece of data to me. He is nr 1 in streams by a long shot but "only" nr 11 by monthly listeners which is super interesting to me. Just looking around wikipedia for a few minutes i found out that despite BTS (who I have heard of) being nr 3 in streams 2021 and nr 5 in 2022 they have "only" the 45th most listeners per month. Both of them are statistical anomalies in that their average listener listens to them a lot more than the average top 50 artist.
And to the other semisapient group of comments from unemployed graphic designers about the bar chart not being pretty enough.
DataIsBeautiful is for visualizations that effectively convey information. Aesthetics are an important part of information visualization, but pretty pictures are not the sole aim of this subreddit.
The data in the chart, the comments about all the people who have never heard about him and what it potentially could imply is what is beautiful about this.

The amazing aspect about music in the modern era is on Spotify I listened to ~700 bands for around 30K minutes in 2022.
All of those 700 bands combined 2022 totals likely don't have as much as this one guy in 2022. Never heard of him, and this is just staggering in scale.
I wonder sometimes "what other massive cultural aspects am I completely blind to?"
