That actually made sense in the lore of the movie which is also a common conspiracy theory. Surprisingly solid movie
Why is it surprising that a massively acclaimed and loved movie is 'solid' lmao, because it's old?
31
u/CraigArndt 4d ago
One of the problems with older “classics” is that people today have often seen what they inspired before going back to watch the original. Which can make the unique ideas, styles, or themes that made the original stand out, suddenly feel used and tired. Also a lot of older movies can have language or themes that at the time were okay, but aren’t today. Not just racism, but you’d be surprised how technology has changed movies over the years. Half of old horror movie plots would be solved with a cell phone and might not be as scary because of it.
So Rocky holding up after all this time is remarkable and a testament to it rightfully being viewed as a classic.

the problem was this specific competition. they put 0 safety rules into place and allowed people to use their palms when slapping. that’s how you get severe injuries and knockouts. they probably did this to get more injuries and knockouts to draw more attention to the show. normal slapping competitions have strict rules and don’t have nearly this many knockouts

Yeah those hits would be a disqualification in any serious slapping tournament. The entire reason to hit with the fingers and not the palm is so stuff like that doesn't happen. Too bad Dana White thinks every competitor should be treated like his wife.

“Serious” in the sense that there’s more adherence to safety procedures. SlapFIGHT or the slapfighting championship, SFC, on YouTube are examples of the most well known, and they do it quite well.
Power slap doesn’t really enforce stepping (which I played baseball, majority of your power in a swing comes from your lower body, majority of baseball players power comes from gaining ground, physics baby), nor do they enforce clubbing, which is hitting with your wrist/lower palm, which is what causes the knockouts, which is what Dana wants, but isn’t safe. It’s essentially just hitting someone with a right hook at that point. Also there seems to be a lack of weight classes, or serious consideration of it.
Like no one is arguing it’s “safe”, much like the UFC it’s two people pummeling each other, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be mitigations to keep people from developing straight up DANGEROUS TBIs and getting knocked out.
The best slap fights are those of endurance, and lasting long enough, where you just question “how much more can a man take?” Not knocking someone out, that’s punch out not a slap fight.
This is just the pinnacle of the sport for me.

u/culturerush 4d ago
I mean I don't have very positive views on combat sports at all to be entirely honest, I say that as someone who's done kickboxing in the past and went to watch boxing live.
To each his own and all that and I can see the technicality needed to be a good boxer or MMA fighter compared to this. But when I went to go watch boxing last and the crowd around me was screaming for one guy to be knocked unconscious I realised that for most these sports are about watching 2 people really hurt eachother rather than the technical aspect. Sort of like rugby fans who watch for the big knockout tackles or F1 fans who watch for the crashes.
I get it, there is a morbid fascination with it, it's the reason why violence in films does well I guess too. But it's not my cup of tea and I prefer to watch skills in running, team coordination, strength etc than trying to hurt someone until they give up or get knocked unconscious.
All that being said this slapping shit is the next level of stupid.

Dana “I slap my wife” White’s Slap Fest. Fucking concussion central. A pro wrestler died in a horrific car wreck taking his daughters to cheer practice. AEW wanted to do a tribute show and Warner Brothers Discovery Executives said no. Because he made a insensitive tweet a decade ago (and did a lot to make up for it). Meanwhile this comes on after AEW. Oh, and his daughters are in the hospital with broken backs, legs and god knows what else.

Slap fighting is supposed to have rules to protect the "combatants", basically all of which were ignored entirely on that strike. The two biggest problems with that swing were the obvious use of the palm (clubbing) and the momentum she gathered by leaning into the swing, both of which would have led to a disqualification in any other slap fighting leagues not owned by that sack of shit Dana White.
You're supposed to only make contact with your 4 fingers because it causes much of the stinging pain without the blunt force trauma. The force generated is also supposed to be entirely from your own generated rotation because leaning away and then putting all your weight behind a swing is substantially more force.
It's just awful technique and most of these blows are going to lead to severe concussions and brain damage.

It was their first time trying it out and they were under the impressions that they had to do like a palm strike right on the cheek kind of thing and didn't expect for the more experienced person to get them right in the neck artery basically based on what they thought the rules were, but I guess it's an allowed hit.

I don't see this catching on for very long. You're asking to get brain damage and I don't think many people want that on themselves.

I lost a tooth -
I lost an eye -
I saw my life go flashing by.
My hearing broke -
My brain changed place -
She killed my whole entire face.
My kidneys stopped -
My spine detached -
It’s not my finest slapping match.
I love it though -
I chase the thrills -
But most of all it pays the bills.

How do you have any chance of getting a real job after doing something like this?

This is the dumbest shit ever. It’s an insult to any athlete to call this a sport. Pay your real fighters instead of producing/promoting this sideshow bullshit!

These vids should be stopped. These have nothing to do with sport, and erverything to do with these people (including dana) being incredibly stupid and greedy. Fuck these guys.

The "fighters" aren't getting paid enough to warrant being called greedy. They're being taken advantage of if anything -- risking long-term brain damage and death for a couple thousand USD.
