You know what? Fuck both of us.

Made me laugh too hard.

How’s .357 do out of a 2.25 inch barrel?

u/[deleted] May 31 '23

WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU.

Awful. I have a S&W snub, full steel. Ran 357 Mag through it, the blast and concussion was very unpleasant, and 357 mag loses a lot of steam from a very short barrel. 38+P for me, your mileage may vary

You are still above 1000 fps, easy to conceal if you can handle it

I mean it works great, it’s just not maximizing the round. Really want 4+” in 357 to start popping pigs but it’s still effective out of a 2.5”. It is loud though.

u/puffinfish420 May 31 '23

I mean any round is better out of a longer barrel. Any round will certainly be better out of a 4” barrel than a 2.5, it’s not really a meaningful statement. The question is rather is the trade off in lethality/velocity worth it for the added recoil, etc.

What model? I don’t mind shooting 357 out of a 2.75” 66

  1. It weighs less then your 66 however it wasn't the recoil but the muzzle flash and pressure wave that was off-putting for me.

Depends on your tolerance for such things. 125 and, believe it or not, 180 grainers aren't bad at all. 158s can be punishing on a long range session. I have this exact gun in stainless with a bobbed hammer. It was my first handgun. I still carry it from time to time if I want something more than 38 special but smaller than my g19. It's a sweet shooter. It has a good heft to it, which helps with the recoil. I also put on Hogue soft rubber grips, which help a ton and gets me an extra finger on the grip.

Way back when I worked as an armed guard we had to qualify annually with our guns. My 3rd year there we were at the range before shooting the qualification and a new guy that came from the Yakima branch pulls out a snub nose Taurus .357 and a box of full power 158gr loads.

Not everyone that works with a gun is a gun person and this guy definitely wasn't. After the first stage the muzzle blast and recoil was so bad he got a horrible flinch that led to him missing almost all of his shots for the day. The 25yd offhand stage was hopeless despite him reshooting 3 times.

We were there for so long the sun was setting by the end and you could see a fireball surround his entire hand every shot he fired.

The SP101 is a great revolver, but it needs a six shot update, I choose my Colt Cobra over it every time because it is 20% more capacity.

14

u/PeeterTurbo May 31 '23

20% more dakka

u/lonenematode May 31 '23

Gp100 exists, 5 shots are smaller frames

9

u/codifier I commented! May 31 '23

GP100 is larger frame, Cobra is same class as SP101. I have all three.

2

u/mainlynativeamerican May 31 '23

I think the .327 magnum comes in six shot. But weird caliber….

2

u/MaverickTopGun May 31 '23

Get it in .327 Fed mag

Or I could keep using my Cobra and not buy a second version of a gun that I already have but now requires 80cpr ammo.

I spent months last year trying to find a blued one for a decent price, and ended up losing patience and going the LCR route. If only I had the cash…

5

u/Inquisitve-Bean May 31 '23

Been really craving a .357 for carry. This or LCR or S&W?

Holding the LCR I fucking hated the release on it and it felt too cramped. Any other reliable recommendations?

8

u/skin-and_boner May 31 '23

For carry, the LCR. It’s a mother-f’r with 357 defense ammo though. I carry 38+p in mine. Easy pocket carry.

2

u/Inquisitve-Bean May 31 '23

I just didn't like the cylinder release button and it felt a little small in my hands. Otherwise seems legit. Maybe it'll grow on me

2

u/MaverickTopGun May 31 '23

.357 sucks ass in short barrels but if you gotta do it, I'd probably go with Smith, something like the the 640 maybe. HAve you seen the Ruger LCRX in 357, though? Can't tell if it has a different release: https://ruger.com/products/lcrx/specSheets/5444.html

2

u/Inquisitve-Bean May 31 '23

Yeah I think I just wanted a wheel gun cuz it's cool but the practical side of me wanted it to be dual purpose lol. Main carry gun will be a p365x or XL when I decide which one I want more. Carried the G45 for a while and it's too heavy and bulky for me

u/Brandenp1988 May 31 '23

Taurus has a .357 ported 4” I think it’s around $450.00

18

u/MaverickTopGun May 31 '23

/u/Inquisitve-Bean"Should I get a Ruger or S&W?"

/u/Brandenp1988: "you could take a shit in your hand for $450.00"

1

u/beltfedshooter May 31 '23

I'm holding out for the new Rossi RP63

3

u/GasMaskGabriel May 31 '23

I have one of these that I unfortunately inherited, and a S&W J frame. The Ruger never gets carried, it is ungodly heavy. Seriously, get yourself an airweight instead.

3

u/MaverickTopGun May 31 '23

Yeah never understood the SP101 use case. It's always been such a tank but no one wants to CCW it.

1

u/1ce9ine Jun 01 '23

My wife prefers revolvers but the lightweight ones have harsher recoil. This isn’t that heavy for off body carry like a purse or fanny pack. If I’m running somewhere quick I’ll borrow it. Super concealable.

Shooting a 101 next to an lcr I’d pick up the 101 every time.

5

u/ICanMakeWaffles May 31 '23

I'm in the same situation as you. I inherited mine. I don't mind shooting it (357 out of something this heavy isn't that bad), but I can't find a single use case for it that isn't handled better by other guns.

Too heavy to carry compared to almost anything other than a brick, and if I were going to go backpacking with a gun, I'd get something with a longer barrel.

Not selling it though. It's built like a tank and I'm pretty sure there's a competition between that and my Security Six for which one's going to outlast the Sun.

I have a SP101 that I like but seldom carry. I need to get some hard cast anti critter .357 for it.

FWIW, it works great with .38 +P though
