He had to be about the only guy to ever drive a beetle while wearing a tie

u/PuzzledRaise1401 Mar 23 '23
No, Ted Bundy did.

A tie in a VW bug? I don’t know who this guy is but he sounds like a monster

Beetles can barely get out of their own way. I can't imagine how bad it would be dragging this trailer.

u/wigg1es Mar 23 '23
The trailer has to made of paper mache and balsa wood.

u/ChoripanesAndHentai Mar 23 '23
It had to weight almost nothing... the hitch is only supported by 4 screws to the sheet metal roof.

Can confirm (username relevant). I live in a hilly area too...I've had my foot to the floor doing 25mph up a hill while apologizing to the person behind me in a 35 zone...in an old beetle you learn to build up your momentum to get up hills....haven't had that thing for a long time, but a fast car it was not....

Had an old Tercel like this. There's 2 pretty big hills I'd have to go up to get to school every day, and I'd have to get up to like 60 to be going 30 by the top. 4 gears and practically no weight.

u/74orangebeetle Mar 24 '23
Yeah, my beetle was a 4 speed, weighed around 1800 pounds....I think mine would've made 48 horsepowerish brand new, but with it being over 30 years old when I had it, who knows.

First car was a Geo Metro. I share(d) your pain. I had to plan routes based on how hilly they were.
I miss that car. I hate how the trend these days is for bigger and bigger cars.

There are some small ones out there...They just discontinued the Chevy Spark/made through 2022, but I'd say it's kind of like a modern equivalent. I used to have a co-worker who drove a geo-metro and I was kind of jealous/I think small cars are cool.

Not only that but beetles don't have the best brakes either. Imagine having to stop all of that extra mass with 4 drum brakes.

u/Garth_M Mar 24 '23
The handling and the braking are the most important parts ! If you can’t get up to speed, it shouldn’t kill you but the other two things might very well

I can imagine what this would fetch at an auction today.

My family owned a campground back in the 70s. Never saw one these. Would have been super cool if one rolled in.

VW Bug Gooseneck Trailer Camper
It was never put into production. It was a concept idea that never went past this demonstration.

Say what you will about this particular set-up But I am in love with the concept. A midsized version of this would be amazing.

Is the attachment to the car just using the rain gutters?
2
u/fangelo2 Mar 24 '23
I wouldn’t trust that roof rack to hold my 40 pound kayak let alone this trailer. And what are those 2 chains? Safety chains attached to the thing that is definitely going to separate from the car? The only thing safe about this is that I doubt you could go more than 25 mph with this setup

u/StillRunning99 Mar 23 '23
Gotta wonder how the roof didn't just get torn off driving down the road.

Can't imagine you could use it for long before the doors wouldn't open or close, lol.

u/dvdmaven Mar 23 '23
I remember seeing ads for these, but never saw one in the wild. Most people who wanted a VW camper bought a Bus.

"If dad performs a few of these gyrations while the family is having breakfast, there could be a trailer-load of trouble" *stupid sexy dad*

Wait, so you don’t need a 6,000lbs truck to tow a trailer? Wait till Americans find out about this one.
2
u/Nyrk333 Mar 24 '23
Depends on the trailer....

u/Signal_Level1535 Mar 24 '23
