It's cool that drones can now track these athletes where as before we just had a bunch of cut together quick camera angles.
32
u/weirdfloof7 Mar 24 '23
The pilot/operator is also very skilled here

Some drones can also track (and otherwise pilot) without the person having to do anything. You set the mode and tell it how high above you and how far back or in front of you that you want it to stay. Press record and it starts to follow you. Pretty barbaric way of explaining it, but that’s the general idea.
Edit: typos. And I rewatched it and I think the other comments saying its FPV may be right. But just wanted to share that drones can do stuff like that now with pretty good precision and ease.

u/red-broccoli Mar 24 '23
They do and it seems awesome. However the little spin at the end makes me think it's a human pilot/operator. While I have never had a drone, so can't speak to flying or the automatic tracking, I feel like the transitions and turns at such a high speed would be too much for any such feature. It seems like the drone would need to follow a set course, while also tracking the athlete. Not saying it can't be done, just feels like this is a human operator.

u/midri Mar 24 '23

It following through the tunnel is how you know it's piloted.
3
u/davenewt Mar 24 '23
Definitely a manually piloted FPV drone (from the way it flies, but also the shadow, the noise of the propellers, etc). This isn’t auto-following, it’s a skilled pilot. Found this similar YouTube vid from last year: https://youtube.com/watch?v=ItrIGRQ956g

u/weirdfloof7 Mar 24 '23
You're probably talking about the Skydio drones, or something similar. I'm no drone enthusiast or anything but I used to do a lot of my own research on drones (and wanna get into the hobby at some point) and have seen them before, but you can tell by the shadow and the sound of the motors it's definitely a FPV drone, if you pause early on in the video you can see the general shape of one with a mounted gopro, unless people also mount gopros on their $2000 tracking drone

They need to mic the skier. Easy fix. Would be a much nicer video with the sound of skies on snow instead of buzzing propellers

I was thinking the same thing lol. Looks like it would be fun to take a crack at. Even just to prove my own hubris.

The last time I was on a mountain, just staying upright for more than 50 feet by the end of the day was an accomplishment. This does look stupid fun though.

The fact that someone names their daughter 'Fanny' will never not be amusing to me.
11
u/CMDR-OIIIIIIIO Mar 23 '23
Fanny is a shorter version of Francis. Somehow? Alas.
16
u/dubcatz6969 Mar 23 '23
Google tells me this is correct for English but in French Fanny is diminutive of the name Estefany, meaning "crown”.

u/bye_Nillu Mar 23 '23
Wait, really?!
3
u/CMDR-OIIIIIIIO Mar 23 '23
Yeah. Francis -cis +ny = Franny. Sorta similarish to how Bill is short for William with no B in it. Bob is short for Robert. Perhaps most relevantly Penny is short for Penelope.
Had to edit because I missed the c in -cis.

Wasn’t there also a famous skier named Fanny Chmelar?
3
u/bye_Nillu Mar 24 '23
I have no idea. The only sports I'm interested in are women's and men's artistic gymnastics. I know that Fanny is a common name in several countries, but knowing what it means in the UK and Ireland has destroyed it for me.

u/iwishihadahorse Mar 23 '23
One of middle names is for my great grandmother, Fanny. My parents consciously found a different middle name for me. Middle school was rough but it could have been worse. Thanks Mom & Dad!

This type of drone actually has 2 operators. 1 is flying and 1 is operating the camera part independently, like a tank
3
u/weirdfloof7 Mar 24 '23
I don't know of any drone like that, every fpv drone I've seen has a fixed camera. Could you link me to what you're talking about?
1
u/jdicaprophoto Mar 24 '23
DJI Inspire
2
u/weirdfloof7 Mar 24 '23
Yeah, this is not an Inspire, and unless I'm not remembering right, that's controlled by a single person as well. This is just a FPV setup of sorts

u/DroolingPuma Mar 23 '23
How does one get the privilege to ski all day to become this amazing?
15
u/doglover1005 Mar 23 '23
Be able to afford going in the first place, live in a place with good skiing for all levels, and be rich enough to be able to practice every week, bonus point for getting instructors for when you are first learning techniques, and for being able to fly to places still snowing once winter is over

u/TheTownTeaJunky Mar 24 '23 edited Mar 24 '23
Pretty sure its the audi 9s. Every year they get the best park designers in the world and go to somewhere in Switzerland I believe or maybe Austria and build the absolute wildest courses.
It's kinda silly though because for all that building they only invite like 20 or so tops skiers and boarders for a week or two. And I think that's it lol.
Edit: my b. Not the 9s.
1
u/flashmodern Mar 24 '23
It’s Red Bull super Ski Cross. About 40 athletes attend. The Audi Nines (now Swatch Nines) is a Freestyle Event. At least 40 top athletes attend this event Source: I work at the company that organizes both events.

2
u/Orbnotacus Mar 24 '23
Can you pump push on skis like you can on a skateboard?
For those who don't know what I mean, when you go down a ramp, if you push down hard, it gets transferred into forward momentum, speeding you up.
1
u/kotraw Mar 24 '23
Yes, its actually faster than getting air.
2
u/Orbnotacus Mar 24 '23
Awesome, I kinda figured, but I just didn't know if there was enough difference between snow and wheels that maybe it worked differently?
Anyways, thanks!

IMO the level of difficulty here is a 5/10. Advanced intermediate skiers and up would have a blast on this course.

Are skis used to steer normally???? Looks like she is directing with her skis. I did not think they were but I am an amateur skier :-)

No. I have no idea what you are talking about. You steer with your lower body and skis.

3
u/eighty2angelfan Mar 23 '23
Not a skier, but if I recall when you turn the ankles the skis flex slightly creating a curve in the direction you are leaning.

What’s wrong with proper downhill skiing? This looks boring
8
u/i_am_covered Mar 23 '23
Making it more difficult makes it more… boring? Interesting take.
0
u/Politically_Penguin Mar 23 '23
I wouldn't say that this is more difficult than traditional downhill skiing, it just requires a different set of skills. Maybe its because if the way the video is shot, but it seems to my untrained eyes that this sport is slower, but you need knowledge and skill in order to clear the jumps as fast as possible, while in traditional downhill skiing you very rarely have a jump of any kind, its more about managing the insane speeds while not having a massive accident. This seems more like a rally race while downhill is more like formula 1. (In my unprofessional opinion)
1
u/i_am_covered Mar 23 '23
Hmmmm I’d say F1 is more comparable to ski cross. Knowing the layout is critical. Downhill is just zooming. Like a drag race.
Every F1 driver should get to do ten laps Silverstone after the season in the car that wins the championship so I get to know who’s the best driver and who’s car carried them.

Impressive solo sport, but I couldn't deal with that droning noise from the drone trying to concentrate on skiing, mostly because I don't ski.
2
u/the_grand_apartment Mar 24 '23
The wind noise in your ears would drown that out easily. I used to ski and the wind noise got to be very annoying after a few hours.

Sad how many people complain about the noise, I like being able to hear the pilot's throttle control

1
u/Aururai Mar 24 '23
That's just physics and fluid dynamics.
Same way your still hear tires from electric vehicles, just the props are more high pitch and very close to the microphone.
That said, toroidal propellers work very well in water and they are new, it might spark some new drone prop designs in the near future
