People get ridiculously irrational on the road. I let the crazies pass me because road rage with a gun is very real.

549

u/Puptentjoe Oct 07 '22

The whole gun and irrational issues has really made me choose my battles. Not worth it.

176

u/ashelton65 Oct 07 '22

The problem is the two irrational road ragers rarely crash into one another, so their numbers never really decrease through shooting only fireball carwrecks.

Tbh I would drive differently in usa. I kicked a car that almost hit me. 50 year old guy tried to fight me. In usa I would be shot

20

u/an-absolute-unit Oct 07 '22

In all honesty you shouldn’t be afraid of getting shot. It’s getting sued for everything you’re worth so that you’ll wish you were dead. Especially if you kick or damage someone’s car at all. They’ll find a way.

10

u/Mr_Shake_ Oct 07 '22

Yeah, kicking my car would 100% be not cool. I’m not pulling a gun, but I’ll def call the cops and likely have evidence on my paint.

I live in the US and besides for cops I’ve seen a gun like 10-15 times in my 30 years. None of them were ever pointed at someone, and I’ve been in conflicts like this before, and am still breathing.

This narrative is nuts.

17

u/YochloMinj Oct 07 '22

Eh, I think it depends on the area honestly. I’ve had multiple drivers stick guns out their windows at me in my hometown (for driving too slowly) , but the place I live now I haven’t ever even seen someone open carrying.

11

u/Mr_Shake_ Oct 07 '22

Get their plates and contact the police. Brandishing a firearm when not threatened for your life is illegal.

9

u/YochloMinj Oct 07 '22

As nice as that idea sounds, they always say they’ll “look into it” but it doesn’t actually prevent it from happening. I lived in a city where shootings were pretty commonplace, so the police had “better things” to do with their time

3

u/Mr_Shake_ Oct 07 '22

Been there friend. Had a utility box stolen out of my truck. I even found it on Craigslist and sent all the info to the police. Didn’t hear a damn thing back.

They could be experiencing a personal crisis. I had a jackass swerving back and forth in an attempt to keep me from getting to the ER. Finally, he was rammed into a ditch. Several witnesses saw it, and because the ER confirmed the life-or-death nature of the emergency, the other guy received the ticket. Simply move out of the way of other people.

I've been hit (and they ran) for trying to out anger a road rager.

Apparently a photo of the back of their car isn't enough evidence for insurance so it becomes a he said she said situation and neither party is found at fault. I was out a fender repair and rim scrubbing (neither serious enough to bother repairing with the tiny amount I got from insurance after the higher deductible) and the got plenty of tire marks on their rear bumper.

Even my insurance adjuster was suprised when it went to arbitration and they went with the neutral choice. Given I had their information and a photo and they had nothing of mine other than "Grey suv"

Moral of the story, if someone's being stupid on the road, just let them go be stupid elsewhere. It ain't worth the headache to try to deal with them.

Even if I’m having a bad day or feeling really impatient with people you never know who’s got a gun and is just looking for an excuse to shoot or on the other hand you also never know how much pain/a hurry someone else could be and I’d rather not slow them down just because of how my day is going.

I think driving is pretty stressful on the human brain.

It’s constant decision making at high speeds with high cost stakes and it’s not even the point of whatever you are doing unless you drive for a living or do it for fun. It’s just a means to get from A to B.

Couple that with the belief that around half the population is not spacial thinkers (good at orienting themselves and other objects in space, and abstracting next moves based on those orientations) you have a recipe for a species that needs universal, reliable public transit.

Edited for typo and clarity

36

u/jackalopacabra Oct 07 '22

I was a professional driver for years and one class I had to take taught me a lesson that’s stuck with me ever since. The instructor had been driving a truck for years and his wife always asked him why he was so tired after driving all day. “All you do is sit on your ass for 10 hours a day.” And he made the point that, while driving, we make 100 decisions per minute. Multiply that over a 10 hour work day and your brain is to the point of exhaustion.

NullPointerException

47

u/wouter_ham Oct 07 '22

Found the programmer

43

u/Hi_Its_Matt Oct 07 '22 edited Oct 07 '22

For those that don't understand - NullPointerException means that a variable does not point to any location in memory. We all did high school algebra, so I'll explain it that way. The important thing to note that Null does not mean 0, It means an absence of data.

Say X =

(it equals Null, there is no data)

Now Solve x + 1

Your computer looks in its memory for what X equals, and finds nothing. It tells you why the equation is not solvable by saying NullPointerException.

so the joke is basically saying: "I have nothing in my memory about what you just said"

its funny, i liked it.

I have a 1987 Chevy Suburban, that is a combination of rust and primer, it sends a very clear message of, I don't give a shit and will light it and your car on fire in the event of an accident. With that said, I am a good driver, but if you are in the US, in the left lane doing the speed limit or under. You run a good chance of me scuttling my truck after it eats you beemer. I don't know what it is now days with people in the US who absolutely refuse to get the fuck out of the left lane and then get pissed that they are getting tailgated. I mean if I am in the left lane and someone is on my ass, I know if someone is not in front of me, then I am the dick. It is like people are oblivious to the fact that just possibly sometimes in their life they are the villain of the story.

3

Some tailgaters don't even pass if there is a lane available to the left. I drive at the speed I want when that happens.

259

u/Dontstopmeenowww Oct 07 '22

If I’m in the left lane going the speed limit and someone approaches going faster - I move

If I’m in the right lane and someone approaches going faster - tough luck. Go around me

97

u/iNvEsToRrEtArD Oct 07 '22

This is the way. And also the way you are taught in drivers Ed, so people really out here showing how little information they can retain lol

42

u/oilman81 Oct 07 '22

You should not be in the left lane at all unless you are passing someone. Obviously in the right lane you can go as fast or slow as you want as long as you're not tailgating.

28

u/mactimit Oct 07 '22

Maybe it's different in every country but where I live (Netherlands) you're still kinda expected to go the speed limit on the left lane.
If you can't overtake someone by going the speedlimit, then said person is driving at the speed limit and doesn't need to be overtaken right?

3

u/heavymcd Oct 07 '22

I slow down.

I figure a safe following distance is generally measured in time, which is a factor of both speed and distance. They get to choose the distance. I’ll choose a safe speed to match it. Together, we’ll get to our destination safely.

Every now and then some crazy asshole will try and brake check me. Jokes on them, you can’t actually brake check somebody who slows up to let you by and who immediately begins establishing a proper three second following distance. Brake checking only works on tailgaters.

u/Fluffigt Oct 07 '22

In drivers ed in Sweden they actually teach you to slow down if someone is tailgating. This is in order to leave enough room infront of you to be able carefully stop if a situation develops where you need to stop. If you speed up when being tailgated and suddenly need to brake, they will slam into you from behind.

59

u/Asylumstrength Oct 07 '22

Absolutely correct approach when there's no other lanes or options.

If someone's slowing down in the overtaking lane, they're the problem, and moving over is safer. Also staying over if you're not overtaking, don't be in the overtaking lane needlessly.

If someone's doing this on a long narrow road, and there's an opportunity to pull over and let them pass, that's also better than an infuriated driver behind, waiting to take a risk on a blind turn.

16

u/Acejr50 Oct 07 '22

Right lane tail gaters have a special place in hell, and they make it themselves.

318

u/GeddaBolt Oct 07 '22

They're about on the same level as people going below speed limit on the left lane with the right lane completely empty, in my mind at least.

154

u/YouAreHorriblexD Oct 07 '22

Or going the exact same speed In the passing lane as the slow lane, blocking the road

47

u/Mammoth_Tard Oct 07 '22

Til I have my radar cruise enabled with max 75 mph, am passing someone on the right of me, and then they speed up to match me. I think there are a lot of people who unconsciously see a car in their peripheral and just match that speed.

For me it’s not a problem to just speed up but imagine dealing with that shit in a truck or company car with a governor.

46

u/Chewy12 Oct 07 '22

That’s such a terrible habit to have. If there’s a car in my peripheral I want to go past it or behind it if possible. Why stay near someone’s blind spot?

Cruise control does make you realize how strangely people drive.

35

u/donatzx Oct 07 '22

People who drive long distances on a highway without using cruise control blows my mind. I can't count the number of times I've played leap frog with someone while I'm maintaining a set speed.

8

u/dkurage Oct 07 '22

I hate this so much, especially since I typically drive the speed limit. It's like me trying to pass them reminds them how slow they're going so they speed up. Sometimes just enough to leave me sitting in the left lane like an asshole while everyone moves to the right lane to pass me like the now speeding car I was trying to pass in the first place. But when they just match speed? Ugh. Some how that's worse.

God on my way to work there's a small stretch where the road splits into two lanes. But the right lane turns into a turning lane and the left lane passes. It's only about a quarter mile to a half mile long (I've never measured it) but there are plenty of signs stating that the right lane is turn only.

So if you live here the general consensus is that you stay in the left lane unless you have a big truck, trailer, etc. because you're typically slower. But you have people going slow in the left lane without being able to pass them on the right. Or you have people who go into the right lane and try to squeeze their way into the left lane as soon as the painted turn right signs on the road appear. But you can't tell if they're turning or not because this is Utah and everyone likes butting infront of eachother and not using their turn signals.

9

u/TMS-meister Oct 07 '22

I frequently get tailgated in a living/school zone. Quite a rich neighbourhood. Fancy cars and all that. 30km/h speed limit. I go like 5-8 over anyway. Still ppl gotta rush and push pass. There's a deep watery ditch on one side of the narrow 2way road too. Sure, who even cares about all them children and parents with baby carriages and dogs or your own safety..

People are just learned monkeys. So far in my 3 years of driving experience I've observed: Big chance that the better the car, the monkier the driver.

7

u/Pagiras Oct 07 '22

Oh, yeah, what is up with the EV drivers? So far I've rarely seen an EV on the road that drives reasonably. They're usually either very unsure of their position and role in traffic or way too aggressive.

5

u/LooktoyourGod Oct 07 '22

I think it’s just money, money changes your attitude. Teslas used to be extremely hard to get in my country and people who bought them thought themselves better than others.

‘Drive how you want and park where you want, when you want. I’m a different breed of person,’

Problem is, now there are showrooms everywhere and there are many more people driving with that kind of attitude than before. My sister in law is rich, and can literally be fined for traffic violations every week and not feel it. In the UK she would have been given points on her licence and have lost it by now, but here she can just keep breaking the law with impunity. She thinks it’s hilarious but the money she spends a week could keep me in food for a good long time.

…..And she drives an Audi SUV.

3

u/Pagiras Oct 07 '22

The penalty point system is pretty amazing. We have it here. Money or no money, you can lose your license real quick and have to go through driving tests again, if you're a real ass on the road. The Police have even started using drones in problematic intersections to see and fine aggressive drivers. Otherwise people drive like assholes all the time and only get in line when police is nearby.

It's also safer. If something unexpected happens or the tailgating idiot makes an error at evaluating the distance, your chances of survival are better if the cars are going at slower speed.

73

u/a-_2 Oct 07 '22

That’s not “being an asshole back”, it’s a simple act of not allowing the pushy douches of the world get their way like they’re used to.

It also doesn't even need to be about that. I slow down because they've reduced their stopping distance making it more likely they hit me if I have to brake for something. So the only way for me to compensate for that is by slowing down myself.

5

u/KistRain Oct 07 '22

I slow down because if I tap my brakes a few times, they'll sometimes back off. If they are being total unsafe idiots about it and refuse to pass, I'll pull off to the right a bit and wave them around. Have people going 80 in a 45 on their phones and tailgating... sorry I don't want you in my bumper because you were sending a text, just go around.

As long as you're predictable on the road -- you're doing fine.

Even speedfreak dickheads -- if they're just sitting in the far left lane and tailgating people until they move aside (as opposed to splitting multiple lanes to try and 'get around' traffic) are sort of ok by me.

The worst drivers are those who are both speeding recklessly, and cutting across all of the lanes of the highway.

The worst part of it is, they'll probably only get to their destination a few minutes faster than they would if they just chilled out and went with the flow... but with a ton of extra risk for everyone else (and themselves).

18

u/adangerousdriver Oct 07 '22

Literally was just on a 2 lane highway, I'm just chilling in the right lane. This guy passes me on the left, then this huge suv comes out of no where and weaves between our 2 cars. Cut infront of me and nearly clipped the front of my car with his rear bumper, missed by inches. He didn't give af, just kept driving at like 90+, doing the same to every car along the road... This was morning rush hour, it was a busy fucking road.

I have an hour long commute and see shit like this all the time. It's taxing on the soul bruh. Really reminds me how I can just die any day with no warning. I can be driving perfectly safe. Good following distance, speed that matches the others in my lane, being mindful of the cars around me, etc... But all it takes is one cocky asshole tearing 100+ down the highway in a road princess tank to scatter my body all over the asphalt.

5

u/umbrano Oct 07 '22

Reflect that shit back with the rear view. If they refuse to turn them off after multiple attempts to signal them, then adjust those mirrors! Remember you have to point the mirror outwards more than you’d think. I have found it to be very effective at not only getting people to turn off their high beams behind me but also keep them off my ass. Some people just shouldn’t be allowed to drive they’re so insufferable.

But what if 50 km/h is the speed limit on a straight road in the middle of nowhere and you're not comfortable with taking the chance of getting pounced by a cop for speeding? Are you still going to stab me?

I swear, where I live, roads like these with a posted 50 km/h limit exist. So yeah, I strongly suggest you just pass and move on with your day instead of stabbing people for complying with the law.

Yeah, no. Don’t ever put yourself at risk for a speeding ticket or any other consequences because some a-hole wants to go faster. Nope they’re gonna let that be your problem, so let their wants be their problem.

Traffic ceases to exist if you free the passing lane and you can’t change my mind. Every time I’m stuck going below the speed limit, I look ahead and it’s because cars are matching speeds in lanes next to each other and not allowing others to pass

29

u/ParrotGod Oct 07 '22

Yea, feels like getting in the correct lane is a smarter move than enraging the person behind you and endangering all other cars around you.

Unless, of course, you’re in the passing lane behind other cars and keeping up with them. 9/10 someone tailgates me, it’s in the passing lane when I’m trying to go faster too. But they can’t see that far ahead (usually figuratively, occasionally literally).

3

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '22

Your last sentence reminds me of people who are like "fuck this I'm going around" only to speed up into a slower car then get back behind me. Like you don't have to have superhuman awareness to see one car ahead guy.

4

u/BoneDaddyChill Oct 07 '22

🤣 Exactly. Just because I’m 15 feet behind the car in front of me, instead of the tailgater’s 3 ft, doesn’t mean I’m gonna let that asshat squeeze into the 15ft. It’s called keeping a safe distance. They never seem to learn, but I hope they try.

As long as you’re in the slow people lane. Have at it. Don’t do this shit in the left or you’re a dumbass.

59

u/Trelly96 Oct 07 '22

This is what drives me crazy, so many people are gonna be like “hey I’m not the only one who does this cool!” But they’re doing it in the passing lane

4

u/oilman81 Oct 07 '22

Exactly. And I'll piggyback on your correct use of language to say that we need to change the lexicon so that people call it the passing lane instead of the fast lane. On an intercity highway, you should never be in it unless you are actively passing someone.

You can still go 95 in the right lane and when you approach a slowpoke, simply pass them in the passing lane then get back in the right lane in case someone comes up behind you doing 105 and they need the passing lane.

→ More replies

14

u/Shanhaevel Oct 07 '22

It's not the "slow people lane", it's the lane you should be driving in, unless you're trying to pass.

5

u/Baridian Oct 07 '22

Depends on the state actually. In some places it's the fast lane and you need to move to the right when a faster car comes up behind you. Others you're only allowed to be in the lane if you're actively passing. Both systems work fine if people follow them.

But, the graveyard is full of people with the right of way. If I'm being tailgated even in the far outer lane I'll move into an inner lane to get the car tailgating me past. I'm not risking my car or my life by having a reckless driver near my car any longer than I have to.

When I was still in school there were some parts of the road wit a stupidly slow speed limit which everyone (including me) largely ignored (For context it was a road leading into town with a left turn, the limit went from 80 to 50kph). So what I'd do if someone was basically in my trunk was to go the speed limit.

60

u/AbbertDabbert Oct 07 '22

A road near me recently changed their speed limit to 45mph instead of 55mph. Almost every time I slow down for it, people ride my ass, I've even had someone do the "what the fuck" gesture to me out the window. Sorry dude, don't really feel like risking a ticket just to speed to the red light half a mile away

33

u/KavikStronk Oct 07 '22

Yeah they can gesture all they want but unless they're paying my ticket Idc

My rule of thumb is to drive whatever speed makes the distance between me and the tailgater a safe stopping distance. Why would I risk my safety by trusting their reaction time in the event I need to stop suddenly?

14

u/MightBeASithLord Oct 07 '22

Slowing down is a million times more safe than speeding up, especially if they continue to tail. If they want you to go double the speed limit before they back off you're not being safe you're being bullied into being the opposite

If car in the passing lane is outpacing a car the right lane reasonably to pass then no, it's not okay to tailgate them.

Pass then get over.

That being said no one should be chilling in the passing lane anyway at any speed. Keep right, pass left.

Whenever someone trying to tailgate me, I try to obey the rules as I don't want any accident to happen.

With tailgating they are choosing a shorter following distance which would be safe for that speed so I'm correcting my speed to match their following distance to make it sure whenever anything happens, there would be no problem for not keeping the proper following distance.

24

u/FriendlyGuitard Oct 07 '22

In some countries, tailgating is also sometimes just the cops trying to pressure you to go faster.

Obviously, in truth, the cop normally tailgate someone that is already speeding to lock on his speed and have that way evidence of the speeding for the ticket. It is just that in my home country, tailgating is a enormous bruise to your ego suggesting you can't handle the speed so the natural reflex is to show the loser what you are made of. And whine that the cops tricked you.

→ More replies

39

u/PouncerSan Oct 07 '22

This but unironically. Tailgating is dangerous, so driving slower mitigates that risk. If the tailgating gets really bad, then just pull over to the side of the road and let them pass.

125

u/KaiserHaftbefehl Oct 07 '22

A Tailgater won't make my change my pace at all. Why should i bother?

127

u/Eiksoor Oct 07 '22

Because if you need to brake in an emergency he won’t have time to react, which puts you and him, and potentially others in unnecessary danger

149

u/Sir_Budginton Oct 07 '22

That’s why you should actually slow down if someone is tailgating you. Bigger gap to the car in front means you have more time to react, and can brake more gently. And braking more gently means you’re less likely to get rear ended.

13

u/-LordOfThighs- Oct 07 '22

Reminds me of yesterday on the highway 6 cars all lined up going atleast 50mph all basically bumper to bumper. Crazy shit

Slowing down a little bit to get them to pass you is likely the fastest and safest way to break that potentially dangerous situation. Others suggesting that you pull over just creates a different dangerous situation if you are in a higher speed area.

For the love of fucking god. Please stay on the right lane. I don't give 2 cents what you do at that point.

Also, when someone is merging, don't swerve to avoid. Speed up or slow down.

I've seen one bad accident and many small ones just because it's an automatic reaction for people to swerve to the left when someone's merging onto the freeway.

4

u/wambly_bubbles Oct 07 '22

Because you're an AH. Stay in the right lane if you don't want to drive as fast as the traffic in the other lanes. Not a hard concept. I leave HUGE gaps in front of me and never tailgate, ever, but I speed like a mfer. And if someone wants to be going faster than the people in front of me, I just get out of the lane and let them fight the guy in front of me. There is absolutely NO reason to do this. Just drive your own car and mind your own business. The ONE time I was weaving in and out of traffic like a lunatic was because my mother was actively dying. You don't know why they're speeding, you could literally prevent someone from being at their family member's deathbed. Grow up.

Stay in the right lane then, and don’t ever touch the left lane. If you do that your gold. But if you do thag in the left lane, acting all like “the speed limit is 75 and you can’t go over that” I gotta wake up call for you…. Get the fuck out of the way. 10

u/isaidit_imeantit Oct 07 '22

I used to do this. I would slow down if someone tailgated me. I don’t do that anymore. I don’t know their issue. Maybe they are trying to get to their family for an emergency. Maybe they’re on their way to the hospital. Maybe they’re taking their dying pet to the vet. I just let them PASS me. Go. You do you! I would hope someone would do the same for me if I needed to get past them for any reason.

Most likely the person who tailgates wants to overtake you, so just go to the right lane, especially if you are driving super slow in the left lane. Just go in the right one and don't create problems on the road, you are not alone on the road... if you can't keep up the speed in the left lane, just move right and let people overtake you.

30

u/Dicketarian Oct 07 '22

I got pulled over by a cop once because he kept getting closer and i kept driving slower. I told him i slowed down to a safe speed considering the distance away from my bumper he was. He ended up giving me a ticket for unsafe driving. The judge asked the cop if he was driving closely when i took it to court, he asked the speed i was going (i was going 30 originally and the cop confirmed it), i told him i slowed down to 15 because the coo was following at an unsafe distance. The judge dismissed the ticket and said “this isn’t unsafe driving”.

3

u/Spacemn5piff Oct 07 '22

It's the responsible thing to do. If I'm being tailgated and have to suddenly stop, it is going to cause a crash. Going slower makes all of this less likely

3

u/UniqueB3at Oct 07 '22

Depends on which lane I’m in and driving conditions. Inside line, inclement weather, maintain speed, ignore asshole. Left lane or center lane, high traffic, move to right, let asshole by. Far left lane, optimal weather, low traffic, WFO and see if asshole can keep up.

3

u/Autumn1eaves Oct 07 '22

It’s just smart though.

If someone is tailgating you, you’re in danger of being hit. Best way to protect yourself on the road?

Slow down.

3

u/_Tock_ Oct 07 '22

Literally 100% of the time I’m tailgated or have someone high beaming me, I’m going to slow down.

3

u/RandyMagnum007 Oct 07 '22

My favorite are the ones that tailgate when there's no passing lane. Like..."you idiot! You really think riding my ass is going to make the 50 cars in front of me go faster?"

3

u/Quick_Masterpiece_58 Oct 07 '22

I don't understand this. Riding my ass makes for a more dangerous driving situation for me so OF COURSE I am going to slow down. But then OF COURSE the ass face behind me is going to get more outraged instead of just using the other lane. Because these fucks are looking for a power trip and any excuse to let loose their dry dick rage.

Edit: rant. I was tailgated omw here.

3

u/UnlikelyComposer Oct 07 '22

Pro tip: Beyond a certain speed, screen wash will go over your car and hit the tailgater. This is especially effective when motorbikers tailgate you.

3

u/crash_and-burn9000 Oct 07 '22

That's technically what you're supposed to do. Slow down until they pass you.

3

u/Saad888 Oct 07 '22

This isn't just something you do to be petty, if someone is tailgating you slowing down is the safe thing to do

The breaking power required to stop a moving vehicle goes up exponentially in relation to speed, and their available room to break decreases dramatically if they're tailgating. Slowing down even 5 to 10 will reduce their required braking distance drastically in the event of you having to slam your breaks or any other possible issue, lowering the chance for collision

3

u/Killdeathmachine Oct 07 '22

I'll give people space until they are obviously oblivious to the line of cars behind them, while driving 10 under the speed limit in the fast lane.

3

u/WhoSlurpedMyMeat Oct 07 '22

My favorite part is when they go to gun it around you only to get stopped even further back by traffic in the other lane.
