[McMenamin] LeBron James ended his news conference tonight by asking the reporters present why he had not been asked about a photo of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones that surfaced showing him, at age 14, standing near white students who were blocking Black students from entering school.

"I got one question for you guys before you guys leave. I was thinking when I was on my way over here, I was wondering why I haven't gotten a question from you guys about the Jerry Jones photo. But when the Kyrie thing was going on, you guys were quick to ask us questions about that....

"When I watch Kyrie talk and he says, 'I know who I am, but I want to keep the same energy when we're talking about my people and the things that we've been through,' and that Jerry Jones photo is one of those moments that our people, Black people, have been through in America. And I feel like as a Black man, as a Black athlete, as someone with power and a platform, when we do something wrong, or something that people don't agree with, it's on every single tabloid, every single news coverage, it's on the bottom ticker. It's asked about every single day. But it seems like to me that the whole Jerry Jones situation, photo – and I know it was years and years ago and we all make mistakes, I get it but it seems like it's just been buried under, like, 'Oh, it happened. OK, we just move on.' And I was just kind of disappointed that I haven't received that question from you guys."

He since has come around to the browns and even made a commercialwhere he dreams he played for the browns and won a Super Bowl.

He jumped on the Browns "bandwagon", but way before Deshaun came to town.

And it's comparing apples to oranges.

One is a current NBA player and former teammate of lebron's who at the age of 30 in modern times clearly and purposefully promoted antisemitism and wouldn't apologize for it.

The other is an NFL team owner who has nothing to do with LeBron whose actions aren't totally clear because the photo was taken 66 years ago when he was 14. He could be a bystander for all we know.

LeBron going to these lengths to defend Kyrie is bullshit. It's just because he doesn't think Kyrie did anything wrong and he's trying to deflect

Crazy thing is he says it has to do with race, but Meyers Leonard said a anti-Semitic slur on stream while playing a video game, and was fined, suspended, and eventually released from NBA where he hasn’t played since. I mean he wasn’t much a productive player, but add in the anti-Semitic slur and it pretty much ended his career.

What Kyrie did was so much worse and I get what LeBron is trying to say to an extent, but Kyrie got criticized for not only doing something awful, but then refusing to even backtrack when given the chance many times to clarify he isn’t anti-Semitic.

21

u/theotherkevin23 Registered to Vote Dec 01 '22 edited Dec 01 '22

Microscopic? The story started because the Washington Post was doing a story about Black coaches not getting a fair shake and Jerry Jones was the only owner who agreed to speak to them about the issue. They then found the picture (from the cover of the NY Times) and pressed him on it. I got an NY Times alert about the story and it was covered in all media. Jerry's excuse about "being curious" is a dumb one but it was about a situation when he was 14. And "Jerry Jones did something racist" isn't exactly breaking news.

Kyrie was a constant story because it was current, and when asked about the issue he kept doubling down and every answer he gave made the situation worse.

Comparing a 30 year old with a 14 year old boy in 1956 is something.

Jerry Jones is a piece of shit today why would you condemn him for something he did as a 14 year old where he's too young and heavily influenced by his environment/upbringing to know better. Kyrie is a grown man its not the same thing. By all means go after Jerry but this comparison is horrible unless he's implying Kyrie has the mental capacity of a young teenager.

252

u/medievalmachine Knicks Dec 01 '22

Kyrie does have the mental capacity of a teenager, and Lebron pursuing this like an aggrieved party makes him look ignorant too. That video wasn't just antisemitic, it was embarrassing an entire community by exposing an astonishing depth of ignorance. Like waving a confederate flag or asking if the US can buy Greenland. History isn't something you just make up in church, there are documents, artifacts, literally depictions of the Jewish people carved in stone by Romans. There's no upside for Lebron to keep bringing up Kyrie's astonishing ignorance and associate himself with it. He should take his cue from Kareem and Obama and anyone besides Kyrie FN Irving FFS.

He wants to be Warren Buffet, he needs to go to college, pronto. That's much more important to preserving his wealth than getting his sons employed IMO.

10

u/rounder55 Celtics Dec 01 '22

No problem with anyone calling out Jerry Jones but it doesn't mean you still have to stand up for Kyrie. Kyrie has done and keeps doing dumb shit some of which is pretty hurtful to specific groups of people. If he was a guy at the end of the bench he'd be called selfish and off the team.

4

u/KingOfSwing90 Warriors Dec 01 '22

I think this is right, and Jerry Jones is a bad person regardless of the photo of course.

I'd just add that if you strip out the context, like this is a different 80 year old man and you found out he was in this picture, you can understand intellectually that this is just where he came from and also decide you don't fw them personally anymore.

We can't always control what makes us uncomfortable, and while there are situations where it's worth challenging that discomfort (e.g., feeling weird around a certain race or ethnicity people because you didn't grow up around them), I think it's kind of understandable if a person's past racism isn't something you want to forgive. You can't unsay everything you've ever said, for better or worse. People should be encouraged to learn and ideally we should be be open to forgiveness, but it's unrealistic to expect everyone to forgive.

Lebron is a fraud. I’m sorry, but he is. Amazing basketball player? Yes. A fraud? 100%

Lebron wants to call this out, but stays silent, or worse, promotes:

  1. Kayne West’s antisemitism
  2. Deshaun Watson’s sexual abuse
  3. The World Cup fiasco
  4. Chinese slavery and torture

The ironic thing about the Chinese situation is that there is a possibility that someone enslaved has made some of lebron’s products.

Lebron is about making money and creating division. That’s it. Nothing about is rhetoric brings anyone together. Nothing.

Kyrie is racist but let’s talk about this dude in another league I have no relation with.

Connecting the Jones photo and Kyrie is such strong whataboutism though. That's why it's a reach and such a floppy point to make.

What Kyrie did and what Jones did are two very different things and condemning them both are okay. But don't use it some how to almost validate Kyrie when LeBron doesn't really seem to know what Kyrie stands for. When Kyrie says "I know who I am" or "How can I be anti-semitic when I know where I came from" - these are uniquely anti-semitic things he's saying if you understand what he most likely believes.

Treat the issues separately and don't use Kyrie as a spring board to talk about Jones, LeBron doesn't have to do that. He easily could just say, "Why haven't y'all asked me about Jerry Jones?"

Here's the video of his full comment

For some context, an old photo of Jerry Jones (owner of the Dallas Cowboys) recently went viral showing him at a scene in Little Rock where some white students were trying to stop black students from entering the school. This happened in 1957, three years after segregation in public education was ruled to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Jones has talked about this photo in the past, but a lot of people are just seeing it for the first time.

"He’d reprise that his wrong place/wrong time spin for reporters after the Giants game, calling the incident at North Little Rock 'a reminder to me of how to improve and do things the right way.'"

Personally, I think it's dumb that people have jumped to conclusions that Jones (14 at the time) was a part of the mob attempting to stop the black students, when all that can be gleaned from the photo is him looking on in the background. I am not sure why Lebron expected to be asked about an ambiguous photo of an NFL owner from 1957 and why he's equating it to them asking about Kyrie, an NBA player and past teammate of his.

Edit: To clarify, I'm not trying to defend Jones here, all I'm saying is the photo doesn't show much. I don't know much about Jones and other stuff he's done, but based on replies I'm guessing it isn't a lot of good.

102

u/Jaerba [DET] Grant Hill Dec 01 '22 edited Dec 01 '22

Bomani Jones talked about it at the beginning of his podcast this week and basically came to the same conclusion. Jerry Jones represents and perpetuates a lot of systematic racism in the way he's always picked coaches in that he only chooses people he already knows, and the circle of people he already knows is pretty similar.

But if you read the WaPo article and the background on it, there's really not much you can infer about Jerry Jones at that moment. He was a teenager observing something big going down.

He described him like Frank Underwood from House of Cards. He's not the guy who'd actually be protesting integration (and in the story, if you read about his father's business it makes sense - it was one of the grocery stores where black people were allowed to shop). He's probably friends with a lot of black people and thinks of them well. But he's not really interested in helping their causes in the big picture.

I don't like Jerry Jones. I think he's a pompous ass. This photo is from 1957 - over 65 years ago! He is in the back of a crowd and we don't know if he is a spectator or partaking in the denying of access to the school. But I think that people here are automatically assuming he was one of the aggressors and insinuating that Jerry today believes a lot of the racist thoughts of the 1950s.

Why was LeBron not asked about the photo? To our knowledge, he has next to no relationship with Jerry Jones and why would he be asked a question about a football owner? Why was he asked about Kyrie? Because Kyrie is a BASKETBALL player who was blatantly anti-Semitic TODAY and LeBron and Kyrie are friends.

And last I checked, LeBron's opinion should be irrelevant after he said that Kyrie's punishment for his hateful comments was "excessive." And, a couple of years ago, LeBron called out Daryl Morey and said he was "misinformed" and "wasn't educated" on the situation in Hong Kong when the Chinese Government was actively persecuting their own people. LeBron made these comments as Morey's comments led to the NBA not having games in China and LeBron felt that he was negatively impacted financially (due to loss of jersey sales, etc.). It was later noted that what Morey said was correct in his tweets and LeBron was the one who "wasn't educated" on the situation. My point is that LeBron shouldn't be asking to talk about every race-related topic when he doesn't condemn all racism. LeBron, you can't condemn one act of racism and give others a pass. Be better.
